Derby first joined AMS in 1989, and has directed a wide variety of Voice of the Customer, QFD and related projects.
Highly skilled in both analysis and client service, Derby has conducted Voice of the Customer studies for companies in
a broad range of industries, including consumer products and services, medical devices, biotechnology, energy, financial
services, and manufacturing. In addition, during Derby’s long tenure, she has participated in the development of numerous
methodologies that underlie key AMS research techniques.
Prior to joining AMS, Derby was an Associate Account Manager in the ASSESSOR division of Information Resources, Inc. and
a Project Director at Yankelovich/Clancy, Shulman. In these positions, she worked with numerous consumer packaged goods
companies to evaluate consumer response to new products. Her primary areas of focus included diagnostic analysis of consumer
response, and forecasting sales potential via volumetric modeling. Derby has also worked on behalf of the Episcopal Church
in Eastern Massachusetts using key census and lifestyle segmentation data to assist congregations in developing and growing
their membership.
Derby received a B.S. from Northwestern University in 1982, an M.B.A. from Boston University in 1985, and an M.Div. from
Andover Newton Theological School in 2002. She also attended a seminar on Successful New Product Management at the University
of Michigan School of Business. Her publications have included the paper “How Can You Be Sure You Know What Customers Want?”,
which she presented at the First Pacific Rim Symposium on Quality Deployment at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia,
and an article on The House of Quality for The Technology Management Handbook.
